The Adventures of Sniper99 – an Airgun Story

The start of this post may sound funny but hopefully, I can explain. I have been back in the CA Bay for about a year now. I’ve had my ups and downs but one thing about where I live that I really look forward to is going to sleep.I don’t know why, after a hard day on the job, going home and dealing with the kids,and the wife down loading her day. I have just about enough energy left to take a shower and crawl into bed.

The past 11 months were cool. Then one morning about 4:00 am I hear this loud sqawking sound. I said to myself what the#$$@^% is that? I tried to get back to sleep but it kept making that sqawking sound til around 8:00 am. At that point it made no sense to of try to go back to sleep. Just get up and go to work thinking this was just a one time deal and that I’ll be ok and that tonight, I’ll crash early and that will be it. But, noooo, the next night,that same bird or whatever it was was back at it again!. The same time and everything! To say that whatever it was ,was getting on my last nerve is an understatement!

The next morning, I went to the neighbor’s home next door and rang the door bell. He open the door real fast and said ” You know, I;ve been meaning to talk to you about your bird! It keeps the Wife and I up all night”. I said  “My bird!, I came over thinking it was your bird keeping me up!”  We both started to laugh and I said ” Have you  ever heard this kind of bird before?” He said .”I have been here 20 years and have never heard anything like it”.  I said my goodbyes and went down a few doors but no one knew anything about it but they all heard it and wanted it gone.

Afew months ago. I went to the AR airgun show and bought a LD pistol. A real nice pistol. I shot it a few times,  . I must say, I really suck shooting with a pistol. The LD is a really cool 22 cal pistol. Lately, I’ve been doing a little shooting with it in the backyard and doing alot better. This morning, like every morning around 4:00 am ( you can set your clock by him) it start making that loud sound. I could’nt take it!, I pulled the covers back, put on my shoes, picked up the LD and a few super dome 14.5 grain pellets and went out side in a tee shirt, boxers shorts and loafers. For the first hour I could only hear him. Outside, the sound was even louder! But I still could’nt see him!. Then, around 5:15 am, ..I saw him!, I could’nt believe it! It was a bird about the size of a sparrow.! He landed in a tree behind my house and started to do his thing.

Putting a pellet in the LD, I cocked the pistol and aimed at the very top of this redwood about 40 feet in the air! I was 30 yards from the tree and put the croshairs on the middle of his body and put pressure on the trigger .Just then, he made that sound again and in mid-song  the pellet was on it’s way!. He did’nt get a chance to finish and to watch him fall the 40 or so feet to the ground was well worth it too.

I went over and picked the bird up, I grabbed the bird with my index finger and thumb and then I heard my neighbor say.”Thank you”.  Well , that’s about it. Tonight should be a very pleasant, QUIET night. 

The bird was a gray and brown color, with a very long tail and blue tips on it’s wings and it had a long beak.
